Okay so it's really hard to get pictures of the geisha/maiko. They walk REALLY fast. I don't know how many horribly blurred photos I took, but man. Who knew they could manage such speed, considering how precarious their shoes look?
This photo was taken by one of my group members; he was kind enough to share it with us, and I thought it was lovely so I wanted to share it here.

the shot was fabulous-- although she doesn't seemed too thrilled with being photographed, she seems resigned to the fact.
without the two obviously modern electrical outlet/devices and maybe the (small/plain) hinges on the shutters (and a bit of aging), this could be a photograph from meiji era-- you would have to make it look like it was hand-tinted/painted for the kimono, hana-kanzashi (the flowers w/streaming leaves ornament) and birra-birra (fancy hairpin) to have color...

Ah, I wondered if she might be a maiko. We had the in-depth difference in the appearance of maiko/geisha explained to us, but I'm afraid I forget most of it. I'l have to change the title...
The fact that parts of Kyoto still look (if you can ignore small things like what you pointed out) like old traditional Japan was one of the reasons it was my favourite stop on our trip.
